It happened to me in my very first Siren fight with a Hell and she had one of the highest debuff resist in that team.

The Siren's possession attack is considered a debuff, so if you have huge resistance (holy water helps), you can resist it. With the right classes and trinket setup, you can get your whole party to 120%+ debuff resist, which should make it that you'll never get picked.
